Modern putting green management involves balancing the agronomic health of the turfgrass sward with golfers’ expectations for playing quality. Although one could argue that this has always been the case, golfers’ demands for ball roll, smoothness and consistency have escalated over the past few decades and competition within the industry is currently fierce. Greenkeepers employ a myriad of practices including mowing, rolling, cultivation (of various forms), sand top-dressing, irrigation, fertilisation, hole placement, pest control, drainage, soil management, traffic control, modifications to the growing environment and interseeding of improved turfgrass species to achieve the desired level of quality and consistency. It can be argued that modern putting green management is the pinnacle of horticultural challenge and achievement among agricultural disciplines.
